Facilitating Equine Balance & Healing.

Willow Creek Equine is focused on education and has acquired a base of skills over her practice in the Southern Alberta area over the last 18 years.

At Willow Creek Equine we have an ‘Integrative Approach to Wellness’ where my goal as an Equine Therapist is to create balance and healing in the horse, while educating the owner and helping them to understand their equine friend. It has been a life long belief for me that true healing is holistic and encompasses every aspect of life that affects the body. As such, my practice provides a full body approach to help equine athletes compete, recover and live at their greatest potential.

My Bodywork Toolkit

Massage and Soft Tissue Release

There are approximately 700 muscles in the horses body and 45% of the horses total body weight is made of skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles are those muscles that attach to the skeleton, power locomotion and movement, and protect the skeleton by distributing force and absorbing shock. The goal of massage is to use hands on techniques to help release muscle tension and adhesions, break down scar tissue, increase overall circulation, move toxins and excess lymph from the body, and overall create better movement and flexibility in the muscles and joints. Massage can also help to increase the overall wellbeing of the horse, support healthy energy levels, strengthen the immune system, and increase overall performance.

Having a qualified professional therapist as part of your horses wellness team can help your horse feel and move their best, recover and rebuild muscle faster, and identify compensation patterns in the horses body that can become more serious over time.

  • The key to performance is ensuring your equine athlete feels their best. A complete, full body approach to health is the best investment you can make in your horse.

Full assessment of your horse, bodywork (massage and variety of other modalities), aftercare suggestions and exercises.

ADDITIONAL MODALITIES AND RATES

  • Acupressure is very similar to acupuncture. The main difference is that acupuncture uses fine needles and acupressure uses pressure from the therapists hands, tools, or light therapy can be used. Acupressure works on certain points and energy meridians throughout the horse to help increase/ decrease circulation in certain areas of the body, organs, and muscles. Acupressure is a valuable tool to compliment massage or to aid areas that massage is not possible or too sensitive.

  • Proper saddle fit is an integral part of equine performance and success. Checking that the saddle is built correctly for the style of horse, conformation, discipline they are in is very important to ensure the horse can move with as few restrictions as possible. Poor saddle fit can cause restrictions and soreness in the body. Bodywork alone will not correct the problem. The combination of bodywork and saddle fit can help your horse overcome discomfort and perform at their greatest potential.

One of the key components to success with your horse is proper saddle and tack fit. Ensure tack is fitting your horse according to their body type for optimum performance.

  • Light Therapy is a very useful tool to help compliment massage and soft tissue release. Each colour of light has varying energy frequencies that help on certain levels of the body and also work with emotions. Light therapy can be used before bodywork to help the body relax, and can be used afterwards to help stimulate acupressure points, increase circulation to an area, and increase overall healing and wellbeing.

Willow Creek Equine uses infra red light, blue light and green light.

  • Assessing the overall balance the rider has in (and out) of the saddle is an integral part of helping the horse move and perform at their best. Rider assessment looks at overall posture, movement limitations, health issues, imbalances from side to side. Any imbalances in the rider can usually be found in the horse as well. In order to help the horse, we need to address the rider. For specific rider treatment plans a referral will be made to other qualified professionals that specialize in treating people.

  • NKT is an application of Motor Control Therapy, neuroscience, and functional anatomy that allows the practitioner to figure out the cause of faulty movement patterns in the brain’s Motor Control Centre. NKT has a set of protocols that allows the practitioner to determine which muscles are not working properly and which ones are over compensating. Specific release techniques and corrective exercises can help to restore proper function and re-program the Motor Control Centre.
